In a celebration not as commercial as any others, Thanks Giving Day gives the opportunity to thank many for various reasons.

Thanks to parents, already old, already grandparents, to whom we ought our gratitude for showing us the way, for their wisdom, for their love.

Fortunately it seems we Latinos still keep that sense of taking care of our older people, instead of leaving them in oblivion at the hands of strangers in nursing homes.

A poll published of late shows that 36 percent of Hispanic homes in the United States have at least one person taking care of a relative due to old age or illness.

According to the survey, conducted by Evercare and the National Alliance for Care Giving, Hispanics spend more time with those relatives than non-Hispanics. Even more, they do not complain. The study shows that 34 percent of Hispanics regard this as not stressing, compared to only 22 percent of non-Hispanics.

What would you thank your grandpa or your grandma?

“Being my second mother,” “He taught me culture and family appreciation,” “The opportunity she gave to go to college and become who I wanted to be,” “The patience she had with me,” “He helped me to develop my talent,” “The good example”… There’s too much to thank for.

Another interesting fact is that 84 percent of Hispanics think their family expects them to provide that care thanks to the way they were raised, and 70 percent think their families would be ashamed if they do not take up the responsibility of watching over a loved one.

Four out of ten said they had to make drastic changes at work, even leaving it, just to fulfill that duty.

Among Latinos, nonetheless, thos figures just emphasize what we already know. In the end, taking care of our elderly people is just a way of showing our gratitude after they taught us how to say thank you.
