An Uber-style app that connects Philadelphians to personal delivery services debuted in Philadelphia earlier today.

Favor, the Austin-based app, will be staffed by 40 “Runners,” or delivery persons.

But here’s the catch: For now, Favor will only deliver in neighborhoods such as Temple, University City, Northern Liberties, Fishtown, Rittenhouse, Fairmount, Center City, and Old City.

Favor chose these specific areas in the city since it’s where a majority of their target audience reside, and according to their research its where most people would likely use the app.

Operating out of Benjamin’s Desk in Center City, Mike Moore, an early employee of the company, will be leading Philly’s branch with five Runner Support representatives.

“As a customer you can go on your app and you can order whatever you want,” Moore said.  “So we have a curated list of things that we kind of researched, but the really cool thing about it is that you can click our ‘order anything’ button and it will take you to blank screen and you can literally type in whatever you want. Dry cleaning, flowers, grocery shopping whatever you want and we will pick it up and deliver it to you.”

The Runners who are doing the deliveries are considered independent contractors by Favor, similar to that of Uber and Lyft drivers. They apply to Favor through its website and are taken through the process of what the company really is, Moore said.

The Runners who joined in the launch today are all from or live near the Philadelphia area.

“We think the experts from the city are the people who live in that city and are passionate about that city,” Moore said. “We think that those people who are experts in the area and know how to get around are the best people to know how to get to places and communicate and make suggestions to customers.”

Requests are placed through the Favor iPhone or Android app, with a flat delivery fee rate of $5 in Philadelphia.

All with delivery times averaging 35min. Flavor uses an algorithm that will let customers know if a Runner is closest to them. If a Runner is near the customer requesting a delivery than that Runner will take up the request delivery. 

“We bring on who we think are the very best people who will be passionate about great food, great customer service and making people happy,” Moore said.  “We’re kind of different from most delivery people in that we don't think an order is just picking something up and bringing it to someone. We want the experience to be kind of like your 30min best friend.”

The idea for Favor is to start with “small delivery zones” in the city. Once they feel that they can offer great quality service and can deliver to everyone in a current zone then the company will begin on expanding a bit. 

So far, Favor has expanded extensively in Texas and has been in Boston for some time. Last year, the company expanded to a few more cities that included Miami, Nashville, Denver and D.C. 

As Favor was working on their launch plans for this year and planning on where to establish their brand next, Philadelphia kept coming up. 

“We heard that people are really awesome here, so we wanted to come out just because there are so many college students and there are so many places to eat and there are so many cool people here that we just wanted to be a part of what Philly was,” Moore said. “Especially with the emerging tech here, we thought it would be a very good fit for us.”

Favor service in Philadelphia will be available 10a.m. until 10p.m., seven days a week. To begin using Favor, a person only needs to download the app from the iTunes or Google Play store. “It’s scary how simple it is sometimes,” Moore said.
