I spotlight millennial trends and offbeat Latinx underground culture

I’ve dreamt about the day I could write for purpose, with passion, since I was an opinionated tween. Now, as an opinionated adult, I get paid to do that in two languages. I’m a Cubanita de Miami™ with an incurable rampant curiosity and a penchant for socially valuable chisme, but at least I do it with integrity (thanks Haverford College!). Health awareness, the rights of women and children, nonviolent direct action, and seeking accountability through investigative reporting compels me. When I’m not writing, I’m crying about how much I love and miss my dog, Sushi.

Open Your Eyes: A South Philly Gallery Celebrates Latin American Art for Nearly 50 Years

 08/04/2017 - 15:53
One of the many multihued and adorned walls of Eye's Gallery. Photographed by Mónica Marie Zorrilla.

If the cliché rings true and the eyes really are the window to the soul, then "Eye's Gallery" on 402 South Street has been the enchanting window to Latin American, Moroccan, and Indian folklore since 1968. The love child of Julia and her husband, the renowned "Magic Gardens" creator Isaiah, the gallery's origins are wondrous like its contents.

Dolores del Río: When Legends become Doodles

"Celebrating Dolores del Río" by Google

Acclaimed "Golden Age" Mexican actress Dolores del Río is honored today in a floral Google Doodle as gorgeous as she was. A society heiress, a mistress to Orson Welles, a victim of McCarthyism, a spokeswoman for UNICEF, and a beauty that reportedly slept "sixteen hours a day" to keep her youthful looks, here's a look at the life of Dolores.

Philly Grows Into Its Anarchist Shoe

Wooden Shoe es una librería que encierra una atmósfera distinta a la de otros establecimientos dedicados a la venta de libros, aquí el enfoque es colaborativo y político. La librería está ubicada en el 704 South Street.  Foto Archivo Particular.

Past a chalkboard that says, “Come inside to read a good book,” on one side and “Don’t be an asshole!” on the other, you come across a tattered SEPTA Union Strike poster from the early twentieth century, preserved underneath an equally withered-away lamination. A few cautious inches deep inside of this surreal time machine, a pillar manages to stand from the 1890s home of an anarchist feminist writer and speaker who lived near Drexel University.

On Sunday, September 25th 2016, Leguizamo came to Philadelphia with the Campaign for Hillary for America, in which he frantically zig-zagged through four events across the city that celebrated hispanidad to promote voter registration and the official launch of IWillVote.com. But, before he got to The Puerto Rican Day Parade, Festival El Coqui, Boricuafest, and Pennsylvania Victory, he spoke with AL DÍA, bluntly effusing about his political interests and his experience as a Latino in Hollywood.

[OP-ED] A "Billennial's": "We dream in our native tongue..."

We are a nation of Pakistani halal food trucks, Mexican film directors, Chinese bridal fashion designers, Italian cartoonists, African feminist icons. The term “American” is attached by hyphen to our rich ancestry, an inclusion of the Greek, the Haitian, the Colombian, the Armenian we have sowed within North America’s soil. We are the children of immigrants, or we already are the proverbial immigrants, and our future children will come into this country with a shiny first-generation birth certificate teeming with opportunity we already know they are deserving of.
