I cover political and social issues directly affecting mostly Latinos in the U.S. and Latin America.

A long-time former editor and columnist for the New York Daily News and El Diario, whether writing for English-or Spanish-language media, my journalistic mission has been to provide a voice for those whose stories often go untold by the mainstream media, a mission I enthusiastically continue to fulfill at Al Día News. A former National Association of Hispanic Journalists Region II Director and member of its National Board, in 2003 I was inducted into the Association's Hall of Fame. Born in Cuba, I have lived in New York City since 1980.

[OP-ED]: Trump in No Hurry to Help Puerto Rico

 09/29/2017 - 10:44
Natasha Lycia Ora Bannan wrote in Facebook, “This is the Trump administration. Granting a mere 10-day reprieve from the Jones Act when recovery will take months costs him nothing politically". EFE

The man took his sweet time, but finally, after resisting for one full week, and just in time for his visit to Puerto Rico on Tuesday, President Trump temporarily lifted the obsolete century-old Jones Act allowing the island, devastated by two hurricanes, to begin receiving ships with desperately needed aid, not only from the U.S., but from other countries as well.

[OP-ED]: Documentary ‘Elián’ Brings Back Painful Memories for Cubans

 06/06/2017 - 16:28
Foto: Cibercuba

“Elián,” a recently released documentary about the saga of Elián González, the little Cuban castaway that became a worldwide cause célèbre 17 years ago, is bringing back painful memories of the Cold War-induced bitter political battle between South Florida Cuban-Americans and Cubans on the island. At a time when President Trump seems poised to reverse Barack Obama’s measures and go back to a Cuba policy of hostility and irrationality, the film becomes even more distressing.

[OP-ED]: Trump’s Dangerous Confusion Can No Longer Be Hidden

 05/17/2017 - 11:19
Trump’s problems are not only with the public, his own party comrades have also increasingly begun to run away from him, fearful that his unpopularity could be as contagious as the Zika virus --and cost them an election. EFE

C’mon people, give the man some credit. Yes, it’s true that these past few days have been completely chaotic and disastrous for the increasingly confused and erratic Donald Trump. But hey, how many other presidents have squandered their political capital so completely in such a short period of time?
