Mayor Michael Nutter official announced the latest details on traffic and security measures during the papal visit.

"Our daily routines will be disrupted. There will certainly be some levels of disruption to anyone of us, but just as soon as we have any more details to announce we will certainly do so," Nutter said. "And that will give everyone enough time to take the appropriate actions, make prudent plans and prepare for an event like no other in the history of our great city."

The mayor said the city is establishing a “traffic box” from Center City to 38th Street in West Philadelphia, stretching from South Street north to Spring Garden and, near the Schuylkill River, to Girard Avenue.

It will start Friday Sept. 25 at 6 p.m., after which the entrance of private vehicles will not be permitted; vehicles can exit but not re-enter until the papal visit concludes. No parking will be allowed on designated access routes for official vehicles.

Only emergency vehicles, bicycles and pedestrian traffic will be allowed to enter from the outside.

*The Benjamin Franklin Bridge will be closed to traffic from about 10 p.m. Friday until about noon Monday. It will be used as a pedestrian crossing.

*PennDOT announced the Schuylkill Expressway, Vine Street Expressway and City Avenue will close at 10 p.m. on the Friday of the Pope’s visit. Interstate 95 will remain open, but some traffic will be diverted at some ramps.

*Highway closures starting 10 p.m. Friday include I-76 eastbound from Route 476 to I-95; I-76 westbound from I-95 to US Route 1; I-676 will be closed from I-95 to I-76; US Route 1 from US 30 to Belmont Avenue.  * I-95 will be open with selected ramps closed.

SEPTA's Airport Line is the only one that will operate to bring airline passengers into and out of the city.

*Around 1,000 troopers will be deployed for crowd and traffic control and the National Guard might be called in for support.
