Stephen Miller: the mastermind behind the rescission of DACA

While the Senate collapses, and the President is troubled with moral decisions, the real culprit of the White House's anti-immigrant positions goes unnoticed.

This is the third consecutive day of the government’s shutdown over the inability of its legislators to reach an agreement on the future of the Dreamers, while the entire country is torn between whom to blame.

The President insists on Twitter that the fault lies with the Democratic Party, who "are turning down services and security for citizens in favor of services and security for non-citizens.”

For their part, the Democratic representatives assure that the problem lies solely and exclusively with President Trump. As the Senate minority leader, Chuck Schumer, explained last Saturday, "it’s next to impossible to strike a deal with the President because he can’t stick to the terms," CNN reported.

"When you sit with the president, you can see that he really wants to do it," the Senator continued. "But then a few hours later because of the right-wing pressure, he backs off.”

The Senator refers specifically to Stephen Miller when he talks about the right wing, one of the few remaining original advisers to the Trump Administration, and who would have invited a small group of writers and editors from Breitbart News to the White House last fall to discuss immigration issues, as reported by The Washington Post.

Miller's goal was to discuss a frontal negotiation: "a possible deal offering protections to the young undocumented immigrants (…) in exchange for tougher immigration provisions, such as an end to family-sponsored migration," the paper continues.

This strategy has put the 32-year-old adviser in the middle of the controversy that has caused the government shutdown, having even participated in the fateful meeting in which the President described several countries as "shitholes".

For media like the Post, Miller could be considered the main "puppeteer" in the White House show, and some representatives of the GOP have not hesitated to denounce it.

On Sunday, Republican Senator Lindsey O. Graham assured the media that "as long as Stephen Miller is in charge of the negotiating immigration, we are going nowhere," he said. "I've talked with the president; his heart is right on this issue. He’s got a good understanding of what will sell. And every time we have a proposal, it is only yanked back by staff members.”

While some specialists consider that qualifying Miller as a puppeteer of the president is an exaggeration - as Mark Krikorian of the Center for Immigration Studies explained - what really worries is that the leader of the country doesn’t know the scope of his decisions to the point of not being able to define a position with respect to sensitive topics such as DACA.

If the President lacks the same determination to make decisions, as he has to write on Twitter, then the debate shouldn’t be about immigration, but directly about the future of the country's government.
