Up for reelection in November, Republican Sen. Pat Toomey's campaign has launched "Endangering Lives," an ad targeting Philadelphia's sanctuary status.

Just hours after he was inaugurated on Jan. 4, Mayor Jim Kenney reversed a controversial immigration policy that was put into place by his predecessor, former Mayor Michael Nutter, in the eleventh hour of his tenure. Kenney's order effectively restored Philadelphia's status as a 'sanctuary city' for undocumented persons.

The policy deals with cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities. Nutter's order, which he shotgunned into effect between Nov. and Dec. 2015, permitted city officials to comply with detainer requests from Immigration and Customs Enforcement — a.k.a. ICE holds — under a variety of circumstances. Almost all of them pertained to undocumented persons who were convicted of a felony crime.

In the ad, Toomey raises concern about what happened in San Francisco (another 'sanctuary' city) last summer. A 32 year-old named Kathryn Steinle was shot and killed by a five-time deported immigrant named Juan Francisco López-Sánchez. The case entered the national spotlight, and became the target of ire for Republican presidential candidates.

Democratic candidates in the senate race are Braddock Mayor John Fetterman, former Rep. Joe Sestak, and Katie McGinty, a former top aide to Gov. Wolf and former Gov. Ed Rendell.

Fetterman and Sestak are the only candidate to make immigration policy reform one of the platform points of his campaign.

Update, 1-15-2015, 8:00 a.m.: The article has been changed to include mention of former Rep. Joe Sestak's immigration platform.
