Nutter: Sanders gets Blacks and Latinos wrong
In one of his first appearances as a CNN commentator, the former Philadelphia mayor took Sanders to task.
In one of his first appearances as a political commentator on CNN, former Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter weighed in on Bernie Sanders' victory over Hillary Clinton in Tuesday's New Hampshire primary.
One of Nutter's first remarks was about Sanders' appeal to Blacks and Latinos.
"Almost every time I've heard him talk about African Americans and Latinos it has been with regard to either jail or criminal justice, and I find that slightly offensive," he told fellow panelists, including political activist Van Jones.
For months now, pundits have been noting that a New Hampshire victory was likely for the Vermont senator, one of the reasons being that the state's population is majority white. Polls show that Clinton has larger support in more diverse states, including those with large Black and Latino populations.
But it is worth noting that Nutter's comments are coming from a steadfast Clinton fan.
The CNN post is one of four part-time jobs that Nutter has landed since leaving office last month. He also spends some time around the country campaigning on behalf of Secretary Clinton's presidential bid. Nutter's support for Clinton goes back at least eight years, when, as a newly minted mayor, he made the headlines for endorsing her over Barack Obama in the 2008 Democratic primary.
In Tuesday night's broadcast, Nutter also spoke negatively of Sanders' critique that Obama has "let progressives down." Fellow panelist Jones argued that any critique of Clinton can be construed as a critique of Obama.
"You can love President Obama as I do, but not everything about the Obama years," Jones said.
The two-term mayor took to Twitter last night and this morning to continue his criticism of Sanders.
Sen Sanders said this about "Buyer's Remorse: How Obama let Progressives Down" by Bill Press. "Bill Press makes the case ...Read this book"

Sanders gets money from Wall St for DSCC, says he's still "pure"; Clinton raises money from same group, Sanders says she's not. Interesting.
