A leading cause of death for teens in the U.S. and around the world is suicide, according to the Centers for Disease Control and World Health Organization. As increased media coverage brings mass shootings and teen suicides to the public’s attention, communities often look for solutions on how to prevent the tragedies from happening. Now, a new study has added some insight to that conversation.

A group of researchers published a study in JAMA Psychiatry on the risks of teen suicide. One of those risk factors, the study’s authors wrote, is home access to a firearm.

The study collected data between 2001 and 2004 from more than 10,000 U.S. teens between 13 and 18 years old. One in three teens said that there was a firearm in their home. Of those who knew of a firearm at home, 41 percent said that they could easily access and use it. Teens with histories of mental illness or suicidal actions had the same access to firearms as teens without histories of mental illness or suicidal actions.

In the Americas, firearms are involved in 46 percent of all suicides. In other developed countries, firearms account for just 4.5 percent of all suicides. Despite the prominence of mass shootings and suicides in the media, few states in the U.S. have passed gun control legislations. Several have since made buying and carrying a firearm easier.
