Is that time of year again. And by that I mean time to fund Latino law education. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Legal Education Scholarship Dinner, an event created to raise money for Latino law students enrolled in law schools in Pa. and the Delaware Valley.

The Hispanic Bar Association of Pennsylvania (HBA of PA) announced León Rodríguez, director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), will be the honoree of the evening.

Confirmed by the U.S. Senate in June and sworn in as the director of USCIS in July, Rodríguez leads an agency of 18,000 which oversees immigration to the United States. In the past, he served as the director of the Office for Civil Rights at the Department of Health and Human Services, and as Chief of Staff and Deputy Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights at the Department of Justice.

"It is going to be a great event. The keynote speaker is an important part of the history of our organization and the honoree is a central figure in the future of our community. Rodriguez's strong civil rights background will serve USCIS well and we want to honor that,"  said Will Gonzalez, president of the HBA of PA Board.

The fundraising dinner will take place Oct. 23 at the Ballroom at the Ben, at 834 Chestnut, starting at 5:30 p.m.

The keynote speaker will be Judge Nitza I. Quiñones Alejandro, United States District Judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, the first openly gay Latina judge in the state.

Judge Quiñones Alejandro is also a founding member of the HBA of PA, and helped organize the first Legal Education Fund Scholarship Dinner in 1989.

"We are excited that Judge Quiñones is going to be delivering the keynote address on our 25th Anniversary. We are also very pleased to honor director Rodriguez at the scholarship dinner this year. His recent confirmation by the Senate as the head of USCIS puts him at the helm of an important agency for the Latino community at a significant time," said Priscilla Jimenez, president of the HBA of PA Legal Education Fund.
