In three years from 2009 to 2012, the vast majority of states in the U.S. saw either no change or a decrease in the number of undocumented immigrants. But mid-eastern states, including Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland, were three of the seven states that witnessed increases.
According to the Pew Research Center, the number of undocumented immigrants in Pennsylvania in 2009 hovered around 140,000. In just three years, 30,000 more undocumented immigrants came to the state. In New Jersey, 75,000 undocumented immigrants arrived in the state between 2009 and 2012, bringing the total population to 525,000 in 2012. The Center credited the an increasing migration of immigrants from countries in South America, the Caribbean, Central America (with the exception of Mexico), and Asia.
President Obama's recent executive action would only affect undocumented immigrants who have been in the U.S. for more than five years and have a child who is a U.S. resident or green card holder.
