Following the targeted attack of a Latino homeless man in Boston, a prominent Latino civil rights has warned that Donald Trump’s anti-immigrant hate speech could cause more backlash against Latinos across the country.

On Wednesday, two Boston men beat the homeless Latino man with a metal pole before urinating on his face and leaving him in the street. Once apprehended, police records say one of the men was partially inspired by Trump’s rhetoric.

The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), the nation’s largest and oldest Latino advocacy group, cited an FBI statistic that says hate crimes against Latinos are on the rise.

“Donald Trump’s hateful anti-immigrant rhetoric has resulted in the senseless beating of a homeless man solely because he is Latino,” said LULAC National President Roger C. Rocha, Jr.

When asked about the incident, instead of offering an apology, Trump called it a “shame.” He added that “...people who are following me are very passionate. They love this country and they want this country to be great again. They are passionate.”

LULAC’s president added:

“This recent act demonstrates Trump’s complete disregard for the safety and well-being of the Latino community and underlines that he is not fit to serve in any elected office let alone as President of the United States. It is obvious that Trump’s vision of making America great does not include Latinos.”
