The number of children 12 years old or younger who were apprehended while crossing the border has increased since last year, according to an analysis by Pew Research of U.S. Customs and Border Protection records.

Nearly 47,000 unaccompanied children and teens crossed the border without a parent or guardian and were apprehended in 2014. While a majority were teens 13 to 17 years old, 7,500 were younger. Another 22,069 children were apprehended when traveling with a parent or guardian in 2014, bringing the total number of apprehended children to nearly 70,000 in the past seven months alone.

The number of unaccompanied children under the age of 12 who were apprehended while crossing the border doubled from 2013 to 2014. Nearly 800 of those children were 5 years old or younger, compared to 283 last year. This year, 94 unaccompanied children were younger than 12 months old.

The information, obtained by Pew through a Freedom of Information Act request, also showed that most of the apprehended minors had fled violence in Honduras. Honduras has the highest murder rate in the world. More than one in four apprehended minors from Honduras were under the age of 12.

Children and teens also fled poverty and violence in El Salvador, Guatemala and Mexico.
