30,000 immigrant children released to sponsors in 2014
The U.S.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services published information on Thursday about the release to sponsors of unaccompanied immigrant minors, and the numbers mirror migration patterns of Central Americans living in the U.S.
HHS didn’t disclose the nationality of the total of 30,340 unaccompanied children that have been released to sponsors this year through July 7, but it is no coincidence that different cities and counties in the states they were released to are home to the largest concentrations of Hondurans, Guatemalans and Salvadorans.
Texas took in 4,280 of the children, followed by New York with 3,347, Florida with 3,181, California with 3,150, Virginia with 2,234 and Maryland with 2,205.
More than 57,000 unaccompanied children were arrested crossing the south border from October through June.
