It hasn’t been an easy August for District Attorney Seth Williams.

Groups are demanding that Williams act out in light of the controversial emails that were unsealed in connection with Frank Fina and Marc Costanzo. Fina is a former state prosecutor who now works for the DA’s office.

Last week, the state’s high court released a slew of emails that were sent from Fina and Costanzo’s government-owned computers. The emails contained pornographic and demeaning content: women performing oral sex, genital close-ups, sex toys, a Black baby holding a rifle, and even a photo of a young teen wearing a shirt that says, “Admit it: You'd Go To Jail For This.”

The Philadelphia Chapter of the National Organization for Women (NOW) issued a statement asking Williams to respond to the matter with “the utmost urgency.”

“That Frank Fina was involved in prosecuting sex crimes makes this all the more egregious,” Nina Ahmad, president of the local chapter of NOW, said in a press release Monday. “This gross misconduct points to the culture of misogyny & racism that permeates the highest levels of government. There must be consequences for such behavior in order to change this culture and to repair & restore public confidence in our law enforcement entities.”

The documents were released at the height of a separate high-profile corruption case. In early August, PA Attorney General Kathleen Kane was charged with perjury, conspiracy, obstructing justice, official oppression and false swearing stemming from an investigation that began more than a year ago. Kane’s lawyers argue the grand jury probe was issued by Fina and Costanzo “to protect their own jobs and reputations."

Last week, Williams’ political campaign finance reports were subpoenaed for further investigation of personal expenses. Williams blamed Kane, his political enemy, for the probe. But the emails, which were sent while Fina was working in the Attorney General's office, have raised stronger disciplinary concerns.

“As a woman of color, I couldn't imagine working under such circumstances,” said Natalie Catin-St Louis, the executive vice president of Philly NOW. “Such revelations underscore how much farther we must traverse as a society to root out misogyny and racism that are so deeply embedded in our institutions.”

Williams' office said Wednesday that they would conduct a thorough review of the material and decide upon action, but as of Monday afternoon the office is on radio silence. A separate incident involving one of his staffers is currently being reviewed by the city's ethics board.
