The Trump administration is planning to end  "Let Girls Learn", a  girls education initiative championed by former first lady Michelle Obama, as reported on Monday by the CNN, citing an internal official document obtained by the media outlet.

The Obamas started the program in 2015. It aimed to increase educational opportunities for young girls in developing countries. However, it "will cease operation immediately", according to the internal paper.

"Moving forward, we will not continue to use the 'Let Girls Learn' brand or maintain a stand-alone program," read an email sent to Peace Corps employees this week by the agency's acting director Sheila Crowley.

" 'Let Girls Learn' provided a platform to showcase Peace Corps' strength in community development, shining a bright light on the work of our Volunteers all over the world," Crowley wrote. "We are so proud of what 'Let Girls Learn' accomplished and we have all of you to thank for this success."

A spokesman for the Peace Corps told CNN Monday they plan to continue their efforts to facilitate the education of girls.

"The Peace Corps continues to prioritize girls' education and empowerment programming," the spokesman said. "Girls' education and empowerment has been a hallmark of our work over the past 56 years and we look forward to continuing those efforts with our interagency partners. We remain dedicated to the passionate work of our volunteers and staff to empower and educate girls in their communities."

The news comes as President Donald Trump's agriculture secretary, Sonny Perdue, announced additional plans to change the healthy school lunch initiative that former first lady Michelle Obama also championed throughout her time in the White House through her "Let's Move" program.

The school lunch adjustments garnered a fair amount of negative feedback during the Obama years, with the sarcastic #ThanksMichelleObama hashtag often accompanying photos of unappetizing lunches on social media, as reported in AOL.

President Donald Trump and his daughter and adviser Ivanka Trump have spoken about their own efforts to educate girls during the past few months, repeatedly touting the importance of seeing more girls and women pursue careers in Science and Technology fields (STEM).
