Last week, Family Guy creator, Seth McFarlane agreed to match up to $1 million for each dollar pledged over $4 million. The Reading Rainbow Kickstarter officially closes on Wednesday, July 2 at 3 p.m., but with more than $5 million dollars raised, the app will expand to the Android operating system, game consoles such as XBOX and Playstation and set-top units like Apple TV and ROKU. The company will also provide year-long subscriptions in more than 7,500 classrooms for free.
“It was my mother who taught me that, by picking up a book, I could 'go anywhere' and 'be anything,'" LeVar Burton, host and executive producer of Reading Rainbow stated on the campaign's website. “I believe that every child has a right, and a need, to be literate. We have a responsibility to prepare our children… and right now, the numbers show that we, as a society, are failing in that responsibility."
