Dominicans in New York now outnumber Puerto Ricans in the city, which could impact the cultural and political scene, according to a study by the Center for Latin American, Caribbean and Latino Studies at CUNY’s Graduate Center.
In year 2010 there were 605,840 Dominicans and 738,978 Puerto Ricans living in the five boroughs.
Jump to year 2013, and the number of Dominicans grew to 747,473 surpassing the 719,444 Puerto Ricans.
The results are surprising considering that New York has the greatest concentration of Puerto Ricans living outside of the island.
More Puerto Ricans live in the United States than on the island — about 4.7 million compared to 3.6 million.
Perhaps one day the same could happen with Dominicans but that day is still far away.
The Dominican Republic has a population of 10.4 million people, compared to 1.5 million Dominicans that live in the States.
