Crime is wicked, and the arrogance of its perpetrators, when under the trappings of law enforcement, loathsome.

Shenandoah in Schuylkill county Pa., had an abhorrent secret according to a federal grand jury. Half of its minute police force of seven might well be corrupt.  The charges range from obstruction of justice to extortion.

While still mourning the murder of Luis Ramirez, assassinated because of being of Mexican origin, the shock of his family and the Hispanic immigrant community worsened when the perpetrators were acquitted of murder, hate crime, and even aggravated assault.

Dark justice is possible thanks to corrupt law enforcers.

Now there is a glimmer of hope that justice might be served thanks to the federal grand jury indictments of the Shenandoah police officers.

Police Chief Matthew Nestor appears to have participated in a scheme to obstruct the investigation of the fatal assault.

Corruption begets more corruption, and that certainly was the case in Shenandoah, one of the indictments charges Chief Nestor with multiple counts of extortion and civil rights violations.  From 2004 to 2007, Nestor conspired to extort cash payments from illegal gambling.

"The chief is arrogant," sentenced former Shenandoah Mayor Thomas O'Neil, summing up quite the characteristic that results in unchecked abuses and impunity.

"They feel that they are a power unto themselves and they're not accountable to anyone," continued the same mayor who must have struggled to run a city that unashamedly appeared exultant as if celebrating Independence Day, when its "boys" were acquitted.

It took a village called Shenandoah to engender such an abomination of murderous children and corrupt law enforcers.
