A contemporary interpretation of the Madonna figure by Daniel de Jesús.

These two artists' mediums couldn't be more different, but their combined exhibit creates the same effectto shift our perspective.

Last week, Taller Puertorriqueño opened their doors to two artists and their works on sacred female images. In "A Contemporary Madonna Counterpoint," Tlisza Jaurique and Daniel de Jesús focused their unique styles through Mexican and Puerto Rican cultural influences. The exhibit will end in April this year.

Tlisza Jaurique was born in Phoenix and moved to the East Coast to attend Vassar College for philosophy, Spanish literature and studio art. She is the first woman with Mexican American heritage to display her work at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. For Taller Puertorriqueño's exhibit, Jaurique blended Mexican culture with her philosophy education to reflect on death, consumerism, change and how we fit into and understand the world.

Daniel de Jesús graduated from University of the Arts in Philadelphia and has worked with Taller Puertorriqueño for five years. His exhibition combined acrylic paintings, animated graphics and a musical performance with the cello. Jesús anchored his work on a Catholic Madonna icon interpreted through his own influences from Japanese anime and comic books.
