It’s amazing but true: Lou Dobbs is leaving CNN after 29 years. He states that it’s of his own free will but it’s not hard to suspect otherwise. Certainly, slamming and attributing everything horrible in our country to Latinos has a price to pay and Lou will hopefully be paying it soon.

Should we rejoice? Absolutely, for his prime time hatred will no longer be spread by a major television network that is otherwise responsible enough to bring us well-thought out and researched news stories like the most recent series, “Latino in America”.

How much should we rejoice, however? Somewhat, because it was the grassroots effort of “we the people” that helped bring this result about (remember, our constitution says that “we the people” can do quite a bit if we work together, as our forefathers did when founding our nation in 1776). However, let’s not rejoice all too soon. Remember that old children’s movie, the “Wizard of Oz”? Well, when Dorothy accidentally kills the Wicked Witch of the East, the kingdom of Oz serenades her with joyful chants of “Ding, Dong the witch is dead. Which old witch? The wicked witch. Ding, Dong the wicked witch is dead”. However, such rejoicing takes place prematurely for it is quickly discovered that while the Wicked Witch of the East is no more an even uglier and more hateful wicked witch—the Wicked Witch of the West—is still around. This Witch now has a more deadly and targeted agenda: to avenge the killing of her sister through the death of Dorothy.

Similarly, while the Latino community celebrates the ousting of Lou Dobbs from CNN, let’s remember that the termination of his anti-Latino tirades on CNN is like the extinction of the first Wicked Witch of the East. We don’t yet know what his next act will be but we can guess: some are already suggesting that he will seek a seat in Congress where he can have a perhaps even greater platform to spread his anti-immigrant, anti-Latino message. If this happens, he will be reborn as the Wicked Witch of the West, with an even more determined and plan, fueled by his growing and uncontrollable anger aimed at those he associates with his defeat: the Latino community. Should this come to pass, the Latino community will need to call upon our inner “Dorothys” to lobby and stop the spreading of this message of hate that Dobbs will attempt to inflict on the American people as Congress debates sorely needed comprehensive immigration reform.
