[OP-ED]: Trump’s Dangerous Confusion Can No Longer Be Hidden
C’mon people, give the man some credit. Yes, it’s true that these past few days have been completely chaotic and disastrous for the increasingly confused and…
This is supposed to be his “honeymoon period”, the time when a president has the greatest opportunity to push his agenda and have legislation passed in Congress. Not Trump, who has managed to alienate many in Congress from both parties, mind you, with his crass behavior, his ignorance and his ridiculous contradictions in a matter of weeks.
If any doubts persisted about his cluelessness, his firing of FBI director James Comey made it crystal clear: There is no method to Donald Trump’s madness despite the efforts of sycophants and opportunists to find some –any—vestiges of sanity in his actions. For his supporters and politicians alike, the time has come to jump ship to avoid sinking with the White House occupant, who seems in course to wreck the entire country.
No wonder Trump’s approval stands at a meager 38%, which according to Gallup’s records, is lower than any of the last four presidents at the same point in their term. Then again, it is surprising that, despite his disastrous first four months in office, and having received three million less votes than his opponent, still almost 40% of Americans give him a passing grade he clearly does not deserve. Go figure.
Trump’s problems are not only with the public, his own party comrades have also increasingly begun to run away from him, fearful that his unpopularity could be as contagious as the Zika virus --and cost them an election. A few others, although not much different from the president in terms of questionable morality, racism and contempt for the poor, have decided to do so perhaps worried about the future of the country.
At least two of those GOP politicians openly critical of Trump are among the most powerful Senate members: John McCain (AZ) and Lindsey Graham (S.C.). On Sunday Graham told Meet the Press’ Chuck Todd that, if Trump really made secret recordings during the private dinner he had with Comey –as he has implied—they must be turned over. As has been reported, Trump seemed to threaten Comey with releasing such tapes if the former FBI director spoke to the press about his firing.
“James Comey better hope that there are no ‘tapes’ of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!” Trump had tweeted on Friday.
“You can’t be cute about tapes,” Graham said. “If there are any tapes of this conversation they need to be turned over. I doubt if there are, but we need to clear the air.”
Keep in mind the last time a president –Richard Nixon, also a Republican-- admitted he secretly taped conversations, he had to resign to avoid impeachment.
Democrats are not satisfied with demanding the mysterious tapes to be released. Smelling blood, some are beginning to ask for the impeachment of the dangerous former reality show personality in the White House.

Stating that Trump is not “above the law”, Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) called Monday for his impeachment. “He has committed an impeachable act and must be charged. The act is obstruction of a lawful investigation of the President's campaign ties to Russian influence in his 2016 Presidential Election.”
The Texas congressman also cited Trump’s tweet apparently threatening Comey with making public tapes of their private conversation at the White House.
"These acts, when combined, amount to intimidation and obstruction," Green said.
Unfortunately, Green’s demands, justified as they may be, have zero chance of becoming real without support from Republicans for such drastic action, which doesn’t exist, at least, not yet. Because as an increasing number of Republicans distance themselves from the president, the chances of them supporting his impeachment also increase.
If it happened under any other president, the Washington Post exclusive revelation on Monday that Trump shared highly sensitive information with the Russian foreign minister and ambassador in an Oval Office meeting last week, would be unbelievable. But by now everybody knows the nation can expect anything from this president and this administration.
According to the Post, while Trump was boasting about the “great intel” he receives, his disclosures to the Russian diplomats “jeopardized a critical source of intelligence on the Islamic State — an information-sharing arrangement considered so sensitive that details have been withheld from allies and tightly restricted even within the U.S. government, current and former U.S. officials said.”
Yes, impeach him ASAP, before he can do more damage to the Constitution, continue his brutal persecution of immigrants and the poor, and in the process wreck the entire nation.
