Nearly one out of every three foreign students studying in the United States hails from China, according to data released last week by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Each year, close to a million students study in universities and educational programs under a visa. Seven years ago, about 4 percent of all student visas went to Chinese students. That percentage has increased six-fold since.

India, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Canada, Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam, Mexico and Brazil are the next top countries of origin for foreign students, respectively, but even India, second, accounts for only a third of the number of students that China sends to study.

GChart from U.S Immigration and Customs Enforcement's latest 2014 Student and Exchange Visitor Program report.

About 44,000 foreign students under visas study in Pennsylvania schools. The most popular majors for foreign students across the globe earning a degree in the United States are business, engineering, computer science and liberal arts.
