A hundred-year ban on openly gay members of Boy Scouts of America was officially lifted on New Year's Day. However, once 18, the same young men will not be permitted to lead youth in the organization.
Nearly 115 million young men have served as members of the Boy Scouts since its founding in 1910. More than 33 million adults have officially volunteered. In 2012, over 1 million adults volunteered to lead and assist packs across the country. None of those members or volunteers were permitted to be openly gay until 2014.
Scouts for Equality, an organization fighting against discrimination within Boy Scouts of America, has gained more than 7,000 members and nearly 2 million signatures opposing the ban on LGBT members and volunteers.
In 2014, openly gay leaders will continue to be refused as volunteers for youth development, despite the acceptance of gay youth.
