CNN Latino shuts down
CNN Latino is shutting down after a year.
The 8-hour syndicated news and entertainment block in Spanish language will end later this month.
CNN Latino launched in Los Angeles last year, their programming focused on issues and topics regarding the Latino community. The overall goal was to reach at least 65 percent of Latino households in the U.S.
A CNN spokeswoman called it "a bold effort to continue CNN's commitment to the U.S. Hispanic marketplace," according to Al Arabiya News.
She also expressed her feelings regarding the failed endeavor. "Over the course of the past year we learned a lot and we will use what we learned to continue to innovate and evolve our presence in the Hispanic community," she said in an interview.
Giovanni Rodriguez, a social engagement consultant in Silicon Valley, gave his reasons on why the programming didn't work.
"This strategy of actually having a separate but equal entity may not be the best. A better strategy could involve more coverage that's relevant to Latinos on mainstream networks and more diverse mainstream news staffing," he said to SCPR.org
CNN en Español, the independently produced 24-hour network and radio news channels is currently available in over 6 million homes in the U.S. and Latin America.
