They are a mixed couple, one of many such couples in America in the year 2010. They also are not the tidiest of neighbors and if they were your next door neighbors, you might not be very happy with them, for their house is unkempt and the grass surrounding it is in desperate need of mowing. He is American, light skinned, blue eyes, perhaps originally of German  descent. She is of Chinese background, a green card holder who is not an illegal alien. Instead, she has always been in the U.S. legally and now eagerly awaits U.S. citizenship. They are good people—law abiding, kind but, nonetheless, sloppy and therefore, annoying as neighbors. You worry about the declining values of your own property, of what would happen if you put your house on the market. How would prospective buyers react once they saw your sloppy next door neighbors' property?

Understandably, you are upset. So, what would you do?  Would you take the direct approach, ring your neighbors' doorbell, ask to talk to them about their un-neighborly- like behavior or would you do what one .12 gauge shotgun toting man in Montgomery County did—leave  the following note:

"Be a White Man and a Chink. Clean your yard".

Pre Hazelton ordinances and pre-Arizona legislation, most people would be horrified at such a note. Post-Arizona, it is unclear of their reaction, for with the passage of these laws, we have once again opened up the Pandora's Box of ugliness in the U.S., a box that this country should know by now to keep tightly shut. By our heated and boiling debate regarding illegal immigration to the U.S. we have somehow overlooked the fact that legal immigration is still permitted under our laws. By merging the two types of immigration into one we have chosen to paint all immigrants with the very same dark brush: if you are an immigrant this is not your country and we don't want you so go home, no matter what you do for our American family and economy.

As we Americans cry out against and protest against worldwide genocide, perhaps we should start at home and protest the emotional genocide that our hate-mongers are stirring up in our midst. America was and is a nation and immigrants. Let's take the hate out of our immigration debate so that it does not spill over to the porches of our citizens' homes. America needs to create thoughtful and comprehensive immigration reform, rather than a dysfunctional country of 50 states, each with warring immigration agendas, which only breeds an atmosphere of pure hatred and leads to the fear that perhaps one day the .12 gauge shotgun toting man will turn to his gun, rather than to his pad and paper, to express his hatred of immigrants.
