Last week, Google quietly submitted a public application with the Federal Communications Commission asking for permission to test what could be its latest development —  wireless communications, or as most are interpreting it, cable-free, high-speed internet.

Much of the application’s information was redacted because, as the company wrote, it “constitutes confidential and proprietary information that, if subject to public disclosure, would cause significant commercial, economic, and competitive harm.” But what is clear from the application is that Google intends to test the transmission of large amounts of information through wave frequencies well outside what is currently used in Wi-Fi. The application has prompted rumors that Google plans to introduce a fast, cable-free internet system, although the company wouldn’t comment.

In the United States, most homes rely on cable internet services, often with few choices when it comes to the service provider. If a company like Google introduces fast, wireless internet, it would also be introducing competition to an industry that has for so long relied on physical infrastructure.
