The Five Million Dollar Kittens
Cats and explosions. This is the magic formula that has become the greatest global success for Kickstarter, the Internet platform that seeks to collectively finance projects. The card game starring exploding kittens has already collected over five million dollars in less than two weeks.
Less than an hour after the project’s launching, it had already collected 1000% of the funds it needed. Behind this success is cartoonist and humorist Mattheew Inman, more commonly known as The Oatmeal. At his side, videogame designers Elan Lee and Shane Small have created what they refer to as a “Catlike version of Russian Roulette”.
The mechanism of the game is quite simple: lift the cards one turn at a time trying to avoid the explosive kittens. If one should appear, the player is automatically eliminated, unless he has a defuse card with techniques such as “deactivate with the laser pointer” or “deactivate with kitten therapy”.
Cards with goats or with magic enchiladas allow the player to attack other players or secretly relocate the bomb for another player. The game has already sold almost 130,000 units but is still on sale on its Kickstarter page until February 19.
