In 2008, when the citizens of Iceland – at that time sunken in a serious financial crisis— took part of their protests from the street to the Internet, they were unknowingly making history. It was the first time that the cell phone went from being a communications device to also becoming another tool to fight for justice.

During the Arab Spring, and the Occupy movements in Europe and the US, during the protests against the disappearance of 43 students from Ayotzinapa or those that took place in Ferguson after a young African American died in the hands of a police officer… During all of these events, the presence of smartphones was essential for their development. Activism in the 21st century is also clearly mobile.

Therefore, different social justice advocate organizations wanted to take advantage of this trend to make smartphones a part of their combat strategies.

MOBILE JUSTICE APP

Last November, the American Civil Liberties Union launched an app to tackle abuse by the police. Mobile Justice App, available for Android, enables police videos to be recorded and then sent to ACLU, which analyzes the images and uses them to report police violence.

The idea came up after its New York office developed an app against stop-and-frisk and that is currently available in Missouri, Mississipi, Nebraska and Oregon.

UNITED AGAINST 1070

Also developed by ACLU, this app takes its name from the polemic Arizona State law that criminalizes undocumented immigrants –the majority of Latino origin—in this state.

The app, which can be downloaded for Android or iPhone, is part of a public campaign to educate the public on constitutional rights as well as to document and report abuse.

CROWDVOICE

Crowdvoice is a citizen journalism platform focused on news relating to human rights violations worldwide that are not included in the mainstream media, and also follows up on social protests.  The Zapatista Party of National Liberation in Mexico, the conflict with the FARC guerillas in Colombia or the civil war in Syria are some of the topics that can be followed on this website.

Moreover, it will soon become a mobile app that will function as a social and cooperative media, where anyone will be able to read information and also provide and add content.

INFORMACAM

A video can be conclusive evidence in a trial. However, not all videos are valid given that proof that they have not been manipulated cannot always be provided. InformaCam is born from this need. This app, a project of  The Guardian Project Project in cooperation with Witness.ORG, originated as another option of ObscuraCam, another mobile app, which allows the image to be edited in order to protect the privacy of those appearing in a video.

InformaCam uses this same mobile used to take data images, which then enables its origin to be checked and verified. This applies in the case of the time, the identification number of the device or the latitude and longitude where the author is located.

The app, which is still in its development stage, could also become a great tool for the media, which could finally count on a simple solution to combat the false information flooding the social networks.
