Despite the relevance of the use of the Internet in some parts of the planet, as a way to access knowledge in a globalized world, in regions such as Latin America, its access has not yet been democratized. Only 46 percent of those living below the US border use the Internet regularly. Sixty-six percent of homes in Latino countries do not even have access to the web.

The most influencing factor of the so called “digital divide”, however, is neither infrastructure nor connectivity, but rather digital knowledge. For this reason, in a move to confront these differences, last February, Google announced that it would invest one million dollars to promote educational initiatives to promote digital skill learning, from learning how to surf the Internet to accessing email and other more complex task such as programming.

The Silicon Valley company will form alliances with local non-government organizations to promote digital education in Argentina, Colombia and Mexico. In both Argentina and Colombia, the funds will serve to train youths on technological tools. While in Mexico, the association “México Crea” will help entrepreneurial woman learn digital skills and those skills relating to business development.

“Our concern is to see how the Internet can generate an economic impact by creating jobs and new companies”, Adriana Noreña, Managing Director of Google Hispanoamérica, stated to Efe Norteña.
