In 2013, thanks to former CIA analyst Edward Snowden’s leaks, we discovered that both citizens and governments from all over the world had been spied on by the US National Security Agency. A report by the Belgium Privacy Agency revealed that they might not be the only ones sniffing through the privacy of our computers, and pointed a finger at Facebook.

As the 65-page report explains, every time that you enter a Facebook.com page a file called datr acts like a bloodhound, capable of sending Facebook information on the pages we visit and that are present, as a page, on the social network. It doesn’t matter whether we have or haven’t 'Liked' the webpages. In all truth, it doesn’t even matter whether we are Facebook users of not. From there, and from the cookies, the Silicon Valley giant takes the necessary data to personalize the ads appearing on FB, for example.

Should this prove to be true, the social network would even be violating the law of the European Union. Mark Zuckerberg’s company, for its part, stated in a press release that the investigation is “incorrect” and ensures they feel “disappointed” with the opinion of the Belgium Data Agency. Facebook defends itself reminding us that the use of cookies “has been an industry standard for over 15 years”, a practice used “virtually throughout al webs” and “legally”.

Following the report, other organizations such as Spain’s Data Protection Agency are also working to clarify what is happening in our computers when we visit this social network.
