Red-light cameras have gone up at the intersection of 2nd Street and W. Erie Avenue just north of Fairhill and south of Juniata Park.

The Philadelphia Parking Authority says there will be a 45-day grace period in which light-runners will receive a notice in the mail. They will then begin issuing $100 fines on December 1. 

Second and Erie is 28th location to welcome the city's Red-Light Camera Program, which was recently extended until 2017. There are 122 red-light cameras currently in place. 

“Our goal at Second and Erie avenue is the same as all of or locations, to make the intersection safer for all motorists, pedestrians and the community as a whole,” said Vince Fenerty, PPA's executive director. "Given the Red Light Camera Program's success at our locations, we're confident that the Red Light Cameras will make people think twice before going through a red light.”

Between 2008 and 2013, there were four pedestrians struck by cars at 2nd and Erie, according to data mapped by Azavea and PlanPhilly. Councilwoman Maria Quiñones-Sánchez said that multiple schools are located within blocks of the busy intersection. 

The cameras also create a revenue boost. The city reported an additional $13 million in revenue for the fiscal year ending March 31.
