The Philadelphia Museum of Art will be hosting their first hackathon next month. The museum’s goal will be to offer visitors easy-to-use tools that guide them through the galleries, share stories about artworks on view, and present an array of thematic connections on subjects such as “Masterpieces” or “Love and Despair.”

Social media will play a significant role in the project and the museum would like visitors to make the galleries their own by sharing their explorations both digitally and socially.

The Museum of Art is challenging teams to craft interactive and social experiences for visitors, which will be judged for their innovation, feasibility and engagement. Teams will be given access to more than 350 iBeacons that will be installed throughout the museum, along with relevant collection information.

Five finalist teams will be chosen to present their work in front of a panel of judges and a public audience. The winning team will receive a cash prize of $1,000, while the audience’s favorite will take home a People’s Choice Award.

The Hackathon will run from March 11 – 13.
