The Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations (PCHR) just announced the recipients of it annual awards, which have been commending Philly’s advocates for social equality, both living and deceased, since 1987.

One award has been granted to Bishop Dwayne Royster of the multiracial interfaith group POWER. A posthumous award has been given to the memory of the inaugural director of LGBT Affairs Gloria Casarez. Ellen Somekawa, executive director of the FACTS Charter School and former leader of Asian Americans United, received another for her years of service. And one award will be split between Adrienne Simpson and the late Lt. Joyce Craig for their acts of bravery to benefit others.

There are also five awards open for public nomination, which will be presented to someone in the areas of corporate responsibility, nonprofit stewardship, arts and culture, public safety and community service. Know someone who deserves recognition for their work in the community? Nominate them by Friday, and if they’re selected, they’ll be notified by March 20.

“Our commission is thrilled by the strong character and the diversity of our award recipients and the positive impact they had had on our great city,” said PCHR Chair Thomas H. Earle in a statement on Monday. “We may be giving them an award, but it’s truly an honor to know that people of this caliber choose to give of themselves in this way in such deep ways to our community.”

The 2015 PCHR Awards ceremony to honor the awardees will be held on Tuesday, April 28, at the Arts Ballroom downtown.
