In the Philadelphia area, 46 Bottom Dollar Food stores will shut their doors by January 15 after the chain's parent company, Delhaize America, sold the stores to discount grocery chain, Aldi, for $15 million in November. While Aldi has said that it is working on expanding nationally, it has not committed to reopening Bottom Dollar stores.

The closures will leave some 2,200 workers unemployed across Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Ohio. The company announced that employees will receive severance pay and some will have access to job counseling.

The discount grocer had operated in several Philadelphia neighborhoods that otherwise had no access to a grocery store, especially in cities like Chester or Camden.
