A new food pantry opened July 2 in Philly.

One of the largest Spanish-speaking non profit organizations in town, Concilio (The Council of Spanish Speaking Organization), and the largest Latino-owned food company in the United States, Goya Foods, welcome “Concilio’s Family Basket,” located at 141 East Hunting Park Avenue in Philadelphia.

The new Concilio food pantry will offer prepackaged food, such as canned goods, rice and boxed milk. It will be open Tuesdays from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. No identification is required to take food items.

“This new resource to our community is in response to a great need we have seen from many individuals,” said Concilio Executive Director Joanna Otero-Cruz.  “We are lucky to work with Goya Foods to provide this opportunity to the residents of Philadelphia.”

The opening of this new food pantry was made possible thanks to a donation of 5,000 pounds of food from Goya Foods and delivered on June 30 with the help of the Phillie Phanatic and Phillies baseball player Maikel Franco. The donation is part of the Goya Gives campaign.

“We are grateful to have the opportunity to support the good work of organizations like Concilio,” said Rafael Toro, director of Public Relations of Goya Foods. “Since the initiation of the Goya Gives campaign, we have donated over five million pounds of food and supported over 250 charities worldwide.  We hope that through our Goya Gives program, we can inspire others to help out as best they can, especially during times of need.”
