"Are you a democrat from Philadelphia?” the man asked. “This is Nelson Diaz. He’s running for mayor.”

Judge Nelson Diaz and his team were handing out campaign literature in the City Hall underground concourse this morning, talking with commuters and trying to get petition signatures.

It marks the beginning of petitioning season, a series of grunt tasks that every candidate must perform to keep their name in the race.

Does petitioning matter?

Yes and no.

Sure, a rare few voters will get inspired by a candidate outside the Dunkin Donuts at 15th Street Station. But for the most part, petitioning isn’t how candidates garner name recognition and win voter loyalty.

Rather, petitioning is more of a requirement to ensure that only serious candidates end up on the ballot in the primary this May.

You can expect to see the other mayoral candidates out and about soon, pamphlets in tow.
