The mayoral race playlist
The candidates go for classical, hip hop, garage rock, soul, and Elton John.
Yeah, we know there are a lot of serious issues right now, and we’re covering them. But this is music. We asked the mayoral candidates what their favorite songs were and turned them into a kind of playlist for you.
Disclaimer: We at AL DÍA do not encourage you to choose your city’s next executive official based on their musical taste or lack thereof. But remember, whoever is elected will play their favorite song on a continuous 24-hour loop throughout City Hall for the entire duration of their first term.
LYNNE ABRAHAM: “Philadelphia Freedom” by Elton John
We truly believe this Elton John song is actually Abraham’s favorite song and in no way sending a message to voters.
NELSON DIAZ: “Don’t be Afraid of the Dark” by the Sonics
The big surprise of the playlist is Diaz’s choice of a catchy 1960s garage rock tune. And you thought he only listened to Bolero music...
JIM KENNEY: “Adagio for Strings” by Samuel Barber
Kenney has mentioned his love of poetry. Now he’s showing his taste in classical music.
DOUG OLIVER: “Takeover” by Jay-Z
Between the picture of “frat bro Dougie O” and his growing reputation in high school circles, we’re not surprised Oliver’s favorite song is the most contemporary of the bunch.
ANTHONY WILLIAMS: “ABC” by the Jackson 5
The State Senator kicks back to the number one soul classic. Maybe that’s the song he’s dancing to on stage in his all-white suit?
