Amid Trump’s promises to save thousands of jobs of being outsourced to Mexico and China, Walmart has announced its intention to carry on an investment of 1,300 million dollars in Mexico. The biggest American supermarket chain forecasts to double its sales in Mexico for 2025.

The investment will bring 10,000 new jobs into the country, where Walmart already employs over 200,000 people.

In the last four years, Walmart has invested 2,600 million dollars in Mexico, according to Guilherme Loureiro, CEO of Walmart in Mexico, quoted in El País.

“I want to congratulate the company, which ratifies its confidence in Mexico and in the future of this country”, said the Mexican president, Enrique Peña-Nieto.

However, the victory of Donald Trump in the past US Elections has had a negative impact in Mexico’s economy, with plunges in the value of the Peso and the stock market. Trump has publicly stated that he will promote protectionist measures and refrain free trade agreements in order to protect jobs in the United States.

The Mexican government is working on a contingency plan to recover the confidence of investors.

As reported today in Spain leading newspaper El País.
