On Monday, the President of the California Senate, Kevin de León, opened the legislative session with a defiant speech in which he promised that California won't make any step backwards concerning immigration issues.
De León, a Democrat, and the top Latino legislator in California, said in an interview with Spanish newspaper El País that "there is a lot of uncertainty at this moment". "We don't now if the President-elect will make his electoral promises of carrying on massive deportations and denying climate change come true. Scott Pruitt, the new chair of the E.P.A is a climate change negationist, a champion of fossil energies. It had never been so obvious before. It's hard hard times for the U.S, there is a lot of insecurity".
The California Senator has promised to defend the rights of all California citizens and to keep their current climate change policies. He also advocates for the $15 minimum wage and for the human rights of immigrants. "We are prepared to defend the policies and the values of the state of California", he said.
