Latinos are sweeping the cinema industry: Mexican actor Gael García Bernal, actress Gina Rodriguez and Chilean director Pablo Larraín are part of the talented list of film and TV stars and creators nominated for the prestigious 74th Annual Golden Globe Awards.

What is the duty of Latin American cinema to combat racism and anti-immigration feelings in the era of Donald Trump?

“Trump has the nuclear codes and the US army. What do we have? A camera. And I’m going to use it,” said Larraín in an interview with British newspaper The Guardian.  Larraín's film "Neruda",  based on the iconic Latin American poet, author and activist Pablo Neruda is nominated for Best Foreign Film. Garcia Bernal plays a supporting character in the film.

Bernal said Latinos with sway in creative industries should stand up for the less privileged. “We have rights, and we have to defend … the people that don’t have rights, who are many. Our role is to be very vigilant and very honest.”

García Bernal is nominated again for Best Television Performance by an Actor in a Musical or Comedy for Amazon's hit show, Mozart in the Jungle, where he plays a brilliant and eccentric conductor of the New York Symphony orchestra. He won the Golden Globe for the same role in 2016.
