Research finds beach sand is dirtier than ocean
Researchers from University of Hawaii at Manoa found that beach sand contains more fecal matter than the ocean.
Sorry beach goers! The sand isn’t as clean as you might think it is.
Researchers from University of Hawaii at Manoa found that beach sand contains more fecal matter than the ocean.
The fecal matter level found in sand could range from 10 to 100 times more than the water. According to the researchers, more fecal bacteria can be found in the sand than in the ocean because it takes longer to deteriorate in the sand.
Coming in contact with the contaminated sand probably won’t kill you, but can cause stomach aches, diarrhea and rashes.
Researchers suggest that people should avoid the beach when “no swimming” signs are present.
The findings were published in the ACS journal Environmental Science & Technology.
