Be careful where you buy your next pet.
New Jersey Governor Chris Christie recently signed legislation that requires pet stores to share information about where their pets come from, in order to fight “puppy mills.”
The bill (S1870) will require every New Jersey pet store to post the information about the breeders (name, address, etc.) where they get their cats and dogs from. They also will have to make the last two years of their USDA inspection reports available.
Pet shops will also be prohibited from selling cats and dogs from breeders who do not follow New Jersey's requirements on the care of animals, or those who have been cited by the USDA for violating the "Animal Welfare Act."
