A local pizza shop is getting national attention for its initiative to feed the homeless.

Mason Wartman, owner of Rosa’s Fresh Pizza in Center City Philadelphia, was recently featured on “The Ellen Show” about his $1 slice mission.

The interior walls of Rosa’s is covered in neon post-it notes that represent prepaid slices bought by customers who can afford it, for those who can’t. People in need can simply ask to take a post-it note off of the wall and are given a slice of pizza.

“Over the last nine months, we’ve given away 8,500 slices of pizza, and we feed about 30-40 homeless people everyday,” Wartman said on “The Ellen Show.”

He based the mission on the $1 slice concept that is popular in New York City pizza shops. Wartman, who is originally from Plymouth Meeting, worked on Wall Street for three years before moving back to Philadelphia and opening Rosa’s.

To help increase business, Ellen gave Wartman a "As Seen on Ellen" light-up sign to hang in his shop. Ellen also presented a $10,000 check from Shutterfly to help with his mission.
