It is a popular time of year for people to decorate their home with lilies. However, you may want to rethink that idea if you have cats.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and veterinarians alike are reminding pet owners to avoid these types of flowers because they are a danger your furry, feline friends.

“Eating small amounts of plants or grass may be normal for cats. But the entire lily plant (leaf, pollen, and flower) is poisonous to them,” Melanie McLean, a veterinarian at FDA, said in a statement. “Even if they just eat a couple of leaves or lick a few pollen grains off their fur, cats can suffer acute kidney failure within a very short period of time.”

The types of lilies that are dangerous to cats include the Easter lily, Tiger lily, Asiatic lily, Day lily and Japanese Show lily. Other lilies, such as Calla and Peace lilies, are not fatal, but can cause irritation to your cat’s mouth and esophagus. Lilies of the Valley are bad for their heart and can cause an abnormal heart beat.

Some symptoms that will appear within a few hours of your cat eating a lily are vomiting, loss of appetite, dehydration, and depression. If this happens, take your cat to the vet immediately.

For dogs, consumption of lilies are not life-threatening. However, it may cause some gastrointestinal issues.
