I remember when I was 16 and visiting Colombia, that my godfather, the resident football expert (of the international kind), would keep on saying the word chance [pronounced chan-CEH]. Chance when it came to goals, chance when it came to the position of teams in the league, and chance to describe if the bus would actually come in on time.

This word, which of course is also found in English, originally came from an Old-French word that meant something along the lines of “the falling of dice”. It struck me as the summation of the entire philosophy behind “the beautiful game.”

That is because, despite the arduous athleticism needed on the field, a large part of the game is also just as much noticing and exploiting opportunities. Or as the head coach of the Philadelphia Union Jim Curtin explained “you make your own luck.”

Unfortunately, the Union just couldn’t make enough luck last Sunday, ending up with a 3-3 tie against the Chicago Fire.

“You score 3 goals at home, you should win,” Curtin said in the post-game interview, looking disappointed at the state of the team, who stand last in the standings behind none other than the Chicago Fire.

Which may explain how exciting, and competitive, the game ultimately was. Chicago scored early on to establish a 1-0 lead only for the Union to score twice before halftime, the first by Fernando Aristeguieta and a beautiful wide-open counterattack by Fabinho.

The game was then tied in the 54th minute thanks to Chicago’s Kennedy Igboananike.

The Union then thought they had clinched the match at the 90th minute thanks to a goal by Sebastien Le Toux.

But just moments later, Igboananike managed to score his second goal of the night and the Fire’s third.

When two teams are so evenly matched, you are sure to find a game that entertains. But winning against the same team the previous Wednesday, Union fans perhaps may have been expecting something a little more boring and with a little more chance.
