Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins was announced as one of 30 nominees for the 2014 Roberto Clemente Award, which recognizes a Major League Baseball player who best embodies the game of baseball through contributions on and off the field, such as sportsmanship and community service.

The award was created  to honor Roberto Clemente and his achievements in his career and community involvement.  Each team nominates one player to be considered for the award.

Clemente is known as one of the greatest baseball players. The Hall of Fame awarded Pittsburgh Pirates player died in a plane crash in 1972 while delivering supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua.

Throughout his 15 year career, Jimmy Rollins has raised over $1 million for charity. He founded the Rollins Family Foundation, which helps make healthy food available to children and families in need, and hosts educational and reading programs (J-Roll's Aces and JRoll's Readers).

Rollins has also helped fundraise for local charities such as The Food Trust, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis Foundation, Prevent Child Abuse Pennsylvania, and St. Christopher's Foundation.

Jimmy was also awarded with the 2014 Phillies Community Service Award for his efforts to fight ALS. This is the third time he has received that award.
