Harvard’s Wyss Institute has introduced a wearable smart suit that could help people walk further and carry more while tiring less.

With a $2.9 million grant from a U.S. Department of Defense agency, Harvard’s Wyss Institute could soon implement its wearable robot model for soldiers and civilians alike.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has been looking for technologies that could help lower soldiers’ long-term health problems — and health care costs paid by the federal government. However, the suit could be used in peace times as well, founder of Harvard Biodesign Lab Conor Walsh told the Harvard Gazette.

“Our goal is to positively impact the mobility of healthy people and people with disabilities,” Walsh said.

The soft suit is made to be flexible and easy to wear, like a pair of pants. The mockup model includes straps that use sensors to monitor tension and movement. The team said that it plans to work with medical partners as well as military to put the suit to use for stroke victims, people with disabilities and those who struggle with muscle movements.
