It has been the star gift during the past Holiday Season. There’s not a home in the US in which at least one of the family members didn’t receive a selfie stick—you know, those extendable sticks that allow you to take selfies from a certain distance.

The perfect accessory for Instagram lovers who take pics of their life every second, however, is an unwanted item in many museums worldwide. In the last few months, many art galleries have raised the selfie stick to the “unwanted” category and have forbidden its use.

On the same level as “no smoking” or “No chewing gum”, centers such as New York’s MoMa or Metropolitan Museum have banned the use of the stick in their facilities, mainly in order to avoid its extendible arm –in many cases metallic—from damaging the art works. Photos, yes, but taken the old-fashion way. Outside of the US, in places such as the Prado Museum, in Spain, or the Degli Uffizi Gallery, in Italy, the stick has also been banned.

And it has been the Italian media itself, which recently unearthed the list of prohibitions of the centennial Uffizi Gallery to remind its visitors what can and cannot be done in its museum. The culprit: Katy Perry who dropped by and did not miss out on the opportunity to take a selfie with “The Birth of Venus” by Botticelli. Don’t spread the example.
