Most Cubans cannot afford a Chanel bag, but the label is now heading to the island
Cuba was always there, even if some parts of the world seemed to have forgotten about it for decades. However, restoration of diplomatic ties between Cuba and the United States seems to sparked a “rediscovery” of the country. The world can’t seem to stop thinking about ways to take advantage of the 'new situation' to make their businesses more profitable.
Musicians, tech companies, entrepreneurs… the latest industry to set eyes on Cuba is the fashion industry. Luxury label Chanel has chosen Havana to show its next resort collection. Cuba will be also the first Latin American country to host Chanel’s resort show.
“The cultural wealth and the opening of Cuba to the world, make the country a source of inspiration for me and Chanel,” said Karl Lagerfeld, Chanel’s creative director, in a statement.
Since 2000, Lagerfeld and Chanel have traveled around the world to show Chanel's Cruise — the name given to Chanel's resort collection. Miami, Venice, Cap d’Antibes, Versailles, Singapore and Dubai are some of the previous stops on this luxury cruise.
Chanel's Cruise is set to arrive on the island on May 3, 2016. And for sure it will be full of models and celebrities from all over the world — all of them ready to make Havana the fashion capital for a couple of hours. Even if the Cubans — with an average monthly salary of around $20 — cannot afford a Chanel bag.
